Zachery’s Post-Op update

It has been such a busy month! My son’s 1st birthday is on Sunday and I’m currently planning for that. July is busy for us too, but luckily not as much.

We celebrated my husband and his twin brothers birthday on the 8th. Then my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary on Friday, June 14th. Two days after was Father’s Day and then that following Tuesday our son had surgery.

I had an earlier post explaining what the condition was and a little about the procedure. What I was not prepared for was witnessing the anesthesia. Oh, it was terrible. I had Zachery on my lap and they put this mask over his nose and mouth which had strawberry lip gloss on it. Then once the gas started coming out he’s screaming and crying and trying to squirm. Then the second he stops crying the anesthesiologist picks him up and puts him on the operating table. His abdomen was puffing up and down in a very odd fashion that didn’t seem normal. I gave him a kiss on the forehead and asked them if that was normal, his breathing. They said that it was. His little eyes rolled back and his mouth was slightly open. Oh my, I must have cried for an hour after leaving the room. It was such a difficult thing to witness,

Fortunately though, everything went well. There were a couple minor complications but in the end the procedure was complete and the doctor was confident that he was able to get everything in the first procedure. If that’s the case then we don’t have to get any more surgeries for this!

After a couple of hours Zachery woke up and seemed very lethargic. The nurse showed us how to care for and clean the area. He came home that evening with a catheter. We were told that we would get it taken out in a week. We saw the doctor the next morning and he looked at everything. We scheduled the next appointment and also got a prescription for bladder spasms in case they occur. (which they have, it’s not pleasant but resolves quickly)

Yesterday was the appointment to take out his catheter. It has been a long week. Zach hasn’t been sleeping really well and cleaning the site is so difficult. He screams and cries when we have to change his diaper because it has to be sensitive. After removing some of the tape by the site that was patched the doctor wants us to keep the catheter in for another week while the patched area completely heals. I was so heartbroken, I really didn’t want the little guy to have a catheter in during his birthday. But instead of being upset about it I’m just hopeful that he will heal well and we can move away from this soon. He is completely normal any other time other than diaper changes and he frequently tries to scratch himself through the diaper. I’m so ready to get back to normal.

If anyone has a child about to go through this procedure or you have any questions about any of the details please contact me. I would like to help parents in any way that I can by explaining everything that I have learned and what has worked for us the best.

I have so much else going on that I will have to update later in a separate post. I have a couple new recipes and also news about us moving. All of that is wonderful news.
